Description
Offering a set of antique leather sulky wheel covers. Appear to be hand made late 1800s to early 1900s. I believe they should fit the early wooden carriage wheels used on the older racing sulky, when the frame was inside the wheels. These measure approximately 30" in diameter. They bow out at the center to fit the wheel hub. They have 6 lacing holes at the hub and 16 lacing holes around the outer edge, so I assume they are for a 16 spoke wheel. These are made of thick leather, 1/8" thick, and have what appears to be a decorative dark circle around the hub and outer edge. The leather is soft and supple, well cared for, oiled and stored for many years in an old barrel when found. This would be a great addition to complete an antique sulky.
CONDITION: No tears, no holes. There are two small peels on one, see photo. Lacing holes are all in great shape. The leather is darkened from the oil and age, clean. Great condition, usable.
