TBS Boar Bushcraft KnifeFallkniven DC4 & TBS Firesteel Edition
The TBS range of knives are made from top quality European materials and are built to last. We have selected some the best steels for the job, the highest quality handle materials and some great leather work to bring these impeccably made knives to the market. The steel is this model is High Grade Bohler N695 Stainless steel which has a high hardness and great wear resistance and is one of Bohlers premium stainless steels. We have decided to make a variant of our knives in this steel as, after quite some testing, we have found that it performs extremely well. It has a higher Carbon content that many other stainless steels which means it holds an edge longer and can be tempered to the same degree as Carbon Steels. This particular steel actually has a higher content than many High Carbon Tool Steels. This makes it perform with pretty much all the benefits of Carbon Steel with the added bonus of great corrosion resistance. The blades have a full "Scandi" grind to them that are wickedly sharp straight out of the box. There are big benefits to having a proper Scandi grind to a knife and these are mainly to do with edge maintenance. A Scandi grind essentially means that the whole bevel of the knife is the edge (there is no secondary bevel) so when it comes to sharpening life is made very simple. When sharpening you can simply place the entire knife on the stone, roll it up onto the bevel and you will always achieve the correct angle for sharpening; MUCH easier than a knife with a secondary bevel! This model is handled in High Figured Turkish Walnut and it is wonderfully ergonomic and fits the hand perfectly for hours of hard work. The handle is very slightly longer (1cm) than most knives of this type on the market and this allows more flexibility for positioning for different uses or simply a better fit for users with larger hands. The Boar comes with a fantastic quality leather sheath that allows you to carry the knife in the regular way or offers the versatility of being able to be carried a linear fashion along a belt or to be attached to the strap of a bag or even on MOLLE type webbing if need be. There is a removable pouch attached to the front that holds your firesteel and sharpening stone. This can also be worn independently on your belt. The Sharpening StoneThe newly-developed DC4 whetstone consists of a fine diamond stone (25 micron) and a very special ceramic stone, made of synthetic sapphires. The advantage of these materials, although they get worn, will still keep their flat shape this is important when you sharpen your knife. And, since these materials are the hardest we know of, they will sharpen any steel, even these extremely hard powder steels. The FiresteelThe firesteel in this model is our own TBS ferrocium rod Army sized Firesteel (9.4mm thick) that gives a shower of sparks at over 3000c (5400f). It makes firelighting SO much easier and will give you thousands of strikes. It also comes with its own, very useful striker which has a useful roamer measuring scale and a bottle opener. The striker with this steel gives a MUCH better shower of white hot sparks than the back of your knife. Our knife range is manufactured from high quality European materials, in Europe, in small batches; they are NOT churned out in their thousands in a factory in the Far East. This allows us to have ultimate control over quality and materials and we are extremely happy with the results.Main Features:N695 Stainless Steel - 5mm Thick 4 3/8" (110mm) length blade 4 3/4" (120mm) length handle Highly Figured Turkish Walnut Multi purpose, high quality leather sheath DC4 Sharpening Stone TBS Firesteel All TBS Knives have a lifetime guarantee that covers all aspects of manufacturing, materials and construction. The Guarantee does not cover abuse, tampering or neglect. Please note that it is a quality cutting tool and is not an Axe, hammer, throwing knife, pry bar, screwdriver or anything else a knife was not designed for. In all cases look after your kit and your kit will look after you. Typical Steel Analysis: N695 Stainless Steel - Carbon 1.05%, Molybdenum 0.50%, Chromium 17.00%, Silicon 0.40%, Manganese 0.40%. TBS OUTDOOR From years of product testing, using, abusing and selling kit through my retail business I know that there are some fantastic pieces of kit out there from some great manufacturers. The only problem I have found that virtually everything I have bought, although very good, I have modified in some way, however small, for my own purposes. This can range from a simple firesteel to a hunting rifle costing thousands of pounds. This is where the light bulb moment of TBS Knives & TBS Outdoor went on........why not design and make products yourself?
When it comes to outdoor gear there is nothing more important and useful than a good knife so this was the obvious starting point. TBS Knives came about by designing a fixed blade knife that could cope with most common tasks but also be easy to maintain and sharpen - this is how The Boar was born. Of course there are loads of fantastic knives out there and it will be an endless argument about which one is best but, for me, none of them seem to completely fit the bill. The Boar has been a fantastic success and has spurned quite a few spin offs, namely in folding variants.
The Every Day Carry model is most definitely the most popular knife currently on sale as it is simply the best in its class. I have always maintained that the best knife on the planet is the one you have on you at the time you need it; ergo, if you design the best pocket knife you have the best knife. I know, that is a bold claim but the closest rival was nearly twice the price and I still can’t work out why. I think the main reason is probably because if you increase the amount of middle men between you and the manufacturer then there are more people that need to make a profit.TBS Knives own all the designs and only manufacture our cutlery from top quality materials. We DO NOT source cheap rubbish from questionable sources and all of our current designs utilise the best materials from Europe and the USA. As a result of this ethos we control all elements of design and construction and can confidently offer top quality products at some very reasonable prices.
The steels we currently use are from the best European foundry’s who produce high quality controlled steels for just about every industry in the World. We use tried and tested materials that we know work.
Every aspect of the materials have been carefully chosen. The handle materials we use have all been selected for their quality, durability and ease of maintenance and the timbers have been sourced them from entirely sustainable sources. The trees that are being used in the Turkish Walnut models, for example, were planted by the Grand Father and the Great Grand Father of the current owner of the mill in Turkey.
Products and tools continue to evolve and, as we all know, there isn’t one tool that does absolutely everything or that every customer will like but we believe that we are currently producing some of the best pieces of cutlery on the market today.
The company will carry on growing and will evolve but I will guarantee that we will continue to produce high quality, wonderfully engineered kit that will serve you for years. We are not about to run off to China just because they can produce something cheaper, it is always worth remembering, cheaper doesn't always mean better! Plenty of very well established, well known and experienced cutlers have learnt that lesson over the last 20 years and brought their production back from the Far East.
