From a local estate auction, I had the incredible luck of purchasing an older Australian stock saddle. I could not sit in the saddle at the auction, and sadly the seat is too small for me. It is a beautiful saddle, appearing very gently used, and in very good condition. The overgirth, brass plate on the cantle, and skirts are marked "The Australian Stock Saddle Co." and the skirts are also marked "Somerset Poley." If you lift the skirt on the left side to look at the billets, you will see the saddle is also marked "The Australian Poley - James Saddlery, Brisbane" (see picture 10). I will refer to The Australian Stock Saddle Co. (Aurora, Colorado) as TASSC. From what I have been able to learn online, James Saddlery of Australia built these saddles for TASSC when it first originated in 1979, and into the 1980s. James Saddlery was established by Trevor James over 40 years ago. He started exporting saddles to the US to be distributed and sold by companies like TASSC. He no longer uses the middleman (such as TASSC (picture 23). I emailed TASSC and they said this saddle is probably 20 years old (or older - but you'd never know that to look at it) and definitely made in Australia. MEASUREMENTS: as per the TASSC/James Saddlery the seat measures 16 1/2" (from dead center of pommel/stitching to dead center of cantle - see pictures 21 & 22). This is supposed to translate to a 17-17.5" english saddle seat or a 14-14.5" western saddle seat. The height of the knee pads (poleys) is approximately 3 1/2" and the skirts are about 16 3/4" long. The gullet is about 7" wide (see picture 20).
