This is an excellent saddle by JW Kirwan, with outstanding tooling.  It has thousands of stampings.  It also has beautiful carved tooling on the cantle and pommel.  It has “J.W. KIRWAN MAKER-FOR MODERN-SHOE-SHOP  LUSK, WYO” at the front of the seat and on the back of the cantle.  The stirrup leathers are very good.  I have long legs, made leather extensions so I could ride it.  These can be removed with no damage to the saddle.  I will include these if the buyer wants them.  The only imperfections are 2 slots cut in the leather behind the cantle – 1 on each side, and a scrape in the middle of the seat. It measures 14” from the base of the horn to the stitching on the top of the cantle.  The fleece is very good.  The saddle strings replaced by the previous owner.  I have had it in my collection for about 10 years.  John  William "Jack" (J.W.) Kirwan was born in in 1881. At some point he moved to Douglas Wyoming where he made fine saddles.  He was considered an expert saddle maker and decorative designer.  In 1940, just after his wife passed away, he moved to Lusk, Wyoming.  He worked in association for four years with T. C. Neilson in the Modern Shoe Shop making saddles. The last year of his life, Mr. Kirwan's work was principally that of stamping or decorating the leather.  He passed away in October, 1944. Most of his saddles from Lusk are stamped with Kirwan-Nielson.  This one has only Kirwan.  I believe this is from his early days in Lusk, and the Nielson name was added as their partnership grew.  Therefore, this saddle is probably from 1940-1941. The collector I purchased it from believed Kirwan was the first to successfully make a 6-string saddle. I have occasionally ridden this saddle, but mostly it has been on display in my collection in the climate controlled house.  I have too much stuff and it is time for someone else to enjoy it in their collection.  I wanted to add more pictures, but am only allowed 12.  Ask questions before bidding - I want you to be happy with your purchase. A handling charge has been added to pay for a box and insurance.  Insurance will be included.  If there is a benefit, I can ship USPS or FedEx.
