The JanSport China-Everest tent is a very rare model that was commissioned by JanSport specifically for the ill-fated 1982 China-Everest Expedition. Prominent members included Skip Yowell, one of JanSport's original founders and Lou Whittaker. This geodesic dome tent design was refined through prototypes by the Rainier Mountain Guides, who would set up prototypes at 10,000 ft. Camp Muir on Mt. Rainier and let the vicious winds and heavy snowstorms test it for days/weeks at a time. The final design featured seven poles in a tight geodesic structure. The tent just creaks in high winds and heavy snow loads don't faze it. The '82 Expedition left one behind at well over 24,000 ft. after tragedy struck, and when the tent was found and dug out by Peter Whittaker a year later, he found it fully functional and slept in it for six days! The size of the tent was based upon the criteria of "two big men and all their gear inside to ride out multi-day storms." 45" high x 82" w and 106" long. The fabrics were chosen for strength and expedition durability, not lightweight-ness, so thus it is that the total tent weight tips 12 1/2 pounds. This is not a backpacking tent; it's best for base camps, hauling by snowmobiles, sleds or sherpas. My model is in nearly mint condition, used in the mountains only twice for short periods. Note: in the mid-80s JanSport sold a revised version of this tent that was pared-down a little and a bit lighter. Mine is the original version with snowflaps and full expedition rainfly. As far as I know, the China-Everest tents were discontinued by JanSport sometime in the later 80s. Final Note: for shipping costs, PLEASE note that this is a long, heavy item and shipping costs vary according to your distance from zip 98501 and could be quite high if you are far away. Actually, I would love for a buyer somewhere in the Portland, Oregon to Seattle area and I'd drive halfway to meet a buyer! |
