Description

Rare ca. 1900 toy team of four work(?) horses I found in (East) Germany.   EACH horse measures 9 inches long (not including tail) and 9 1/2 inches high.  Those more knowledgeable than I am will know if these were intended as work horses or to pull a wagon or coach, etc.   Of the four horses, only one has a saddle made of leather.   All horses have hard leather draft(?) collars along with carved wooden neck yokes which have tiny metal rings which hold the soft leather reins.   The leather fittings of the two horses in front are more elaborate than the two horses in the back.  The genuine black horse hide is in great condition.   Hooves are carved wood.   There are also ropes coming out of the leather fittings, and there is one wooden two-horse evener with single trees which is still attached to one rope, but I have no idea where the other side should be attached so I've left it as is.  The iron pieces on the horse evener look hand made and are a bit rusty and could be cleaned up, but I'm leaving everything as is.  All horses have inset glass eyes and open carved wooden mouths and wooden nostrils painted pink inside.   There is an H-shaped metal bar attached to the underside of the two rear horses holding them together side by side.  The horses are all in wonderful condition for their age.   Only the one horse (left rear) has trouble standing, and it appears that one hind leg is a bit too short, but it was made that way and not as a result of any break.   All four horses are connected to one another by the soft leather reins.    The detail of these horses is amazing, and they make a wonderful display, especially because of the large size of each horse.   Would be amazing when paired with an old German wagon, etc.
