My father loved camping. He loved hiking. He loved the woods so much that when he was ready to build his own home, he chose to place a lone house on a mountaintop in Colorado. He installed security cameras and tripwire around the perimeter so he could protect the house from bears. And he filled the home with unique, custom designed hidden compartments for storing weaponry, strategically placed so that a weapon would be concealed and yet within reach at all times. (This is making him sound like a paranoid survivalist prepper freak, but he also had a close family of course, or else I wouldn’t be writing this right now.)My father was also a Marine. He knew Marcus Luttrell, and the other SEALs involved in Operation Red Wings, depicted in the 2013 movie Lone Survivor (and book by the same name). He knew , and even gave me one of his original “Despite what your momma told you… violence does solve problems” shoulder patches, which Kyle had woven by hand before he used this as the motto for his tactical training company Craft International in 2009. One of his military awards was for surviving for over a month after being stranded alone unexpectedly in the wilderness of North Africa. When his team came back for him, they hadn’t expected to find him alive. The man truly knew how to evaluate the holistic survival value of the tools he chose to carry with him.Ultralight backpacking has risen exponentially in popularity in recent years. The subreddit, for example, has almost 45,000 readers and at any given time you clink this link, somewhere between 100 and 200 redditors will be actively reading. aficionados take the notion to a sometimes masochistic extreme, often foregoing the usual tents in favor of learning to sleep under a bivy or tarp which is simply angled to provide shade from sun and rain. Ultralight backpacking has its virtues, of course: imagine being able to take off through the woods and explore, have everything you could possibly need to survive and enjoy the trip, and never once notice being weighted down by the gear you carry. However, ultralight backpacks also come with significant trade-offs. Usually, to save weight, the materials aren’t very durable, so they’re likely to break down and rip within a year or two of heavy use. Tactical military backpacks — real ones, not cheap rip–off generic “military backpacks” — will solve this problem by using extremely thick and durable materials, while adding all sorts of useful features familiar to military operators (like MOLLE webbing attachments). But again, this comes with a trade-off for weight. You will never find an ordinary military backpack that would make an ultralight backpacker happy. This rucksack is the exception. The pack is manufactured by a branch of the Canadian high–end outdoors company ARC’TERYX known as ARC’TERYX LEAF—LEAF stands for “Law Enforcement and Armed Forces”. This was my father’s favorite backpack. It combines an incredible lightweight design with extremely durable 500D Cordura materials in a way that gives you a lightweight design you won’t find in any other military pack, and a level of durability you won’t find in any “ultralight” pack from REI.

Sometimes he wanted to go on ultralight hiking trips alone. Other times, he wanted to camp more comfortably and normally and bring the family along with him. But whatever he did, he used this pack for all of it. Whether he was packing light to head out bush–crafting and practice his survival skills or he was bringing all of us along for a leisurely family camping trip, we saw him carrying this pack. When asked he would rattle on and on about the unique benefits of the pack. I particularly remember him talking about how the unusual wide shape of the pack helps distribute its weight in a way that adds mobility and helps slim the silhouette of the person carrying it. Now that I think of it, I don’t know if he found this part so important because he actually used this pack during high–level sniper scout missions or not. In any case, the main point of value was the one I’ve emphasized here: the incredible balance the pack strikes of material strength and durability against light weight and easy mobility. My father knew the men who ran the local military surplus shops quite well. When word came that ARC’TERYX LEAF was discontinuing these packs, they made sure to make a bulk order and get as many of the remaining supply as they possibly could. My father bought a few of them, expecting that he couldn’t possibly burn through more than a few in his lifetime thanks to the high level of durability of the packs. Since I’ve been recommending them to friends for so long, I recently decided to go ahead and buy up everything that was left of the remaining supply so I could sell them myself (both to get the packs to people who will truly appreciate their worth, and – yes – to make a small profit!)Please note: these are in crocodile / desert tan color, not multicam as pictured!! The size is tall.
The packs are all still inside the original shrink wrap packaging, with all the original tags and product detail pamphlets included. The reason I’ve posted a picture of a multicam pack instead of the crocodile / desert tan color I’m selling here in this listing is because I own the multicam pack and have thus already opened the product. I tried posting stock photos of the crocodile / desert tan, but this apparently violated some copyright rule so I had to find an alternative. The product I’m selling is identical in every way to the pack listed in the photographs, except for the color. And the fact that the packs I’m selling have never been opened since being shipped from the factory!!I’m listing the item for a default price of $450, almost $300 below the MSRP value of $739. The packs are selling fast, and so far I'm getting excellent feedback from the lightweight backpackers, ex-military operators, and everyone in between. My personal history is your unusually great deal on an excellent quality product. Also note I plan to raise the price as I sell more of these packs and my supply runs low!If you’re an international buyer, please contact me and wait for my approval before placing an order for the pack. If I decide to accept an international offer, it will take me a little extra time to prepare the item for international shipping. And because of what this pack means to me I generally prefer to sell to American buyers. Thank you! :)
