After reading so many raving reviews about the Biloite Camp Stove 1, we decided to make sure Wylies Outdoor World have to do some serious testing over time to see if it really is as good as we thought.Owner of Wylies Outdoor World, Drew Wylie has been testing this out on the trail a couple of nights a week for the last couple of months. Out in various weather conditions, Wind, sleet, snow, rain and of course, the glorious 15 degree heat of the Scottish Spring sunshine. Here are Drews personal views of the Biolite stove, kettle pot and Gill pan set...First Impressions. On arrival, I was quite taken by the sheer size and weight of the box it arrived in. I did not weigh the box but it felt like a four peace Table set in its size and weight.I had been keen to test this out for some time, and my batteries on both my phone and my camera would always run out on a trip. Needing a solution to this and being in the market for a new stove. I thought “kill two birds with one stone and get some good content for the website also, It’s a no brainer!" After taking it out the box, I was pleased to see that much of the bulk and weight was the outer packaging and was also impressed by the build quality of off the parts of the cooking system. The new additions are a clear improvement on the previous model and will add substantial life to the products in the real world.Weight and SizeI would say that if you are an "ultra Lighter" this will feel like a lead weight in your pack and takes up almost double what many other stove and cook sets do. But after putting it in my pack for a combined weight test I found that the additional weight was acceptable for a moderate hike distance with the total weight of my pack for a one or day trip averaging out around 40-45kg in a 65Ltr Kombat UK - Viking Patrol Pack.Almost all the weight resides in the battery, as you would expect. The kettle holds 1.5 Litres. In addition, houses a 2-size mug bowl for both drinks and a food bowl. The stove itself packs away neatly into the kettle, with a smaller secondary nylon stuff sack to cover the battery and help keep it clean from the inside of the burn chamber in which the battery sits when packed up. Once the kettle lid is in place and inside the larger primary stuff sack It is a we contained cooking and eating system.Usability - The stoveSupplied with the bundle were some organic firelighters that were compressed cardboard. The stove was more than stable enough when used on uneven woodland ground. One my first attempt with the woodland of the West Lomond Hill being soaking wet I initially found it quite challenging to get a good hot fire going using the provided fire lighters I had never owned a top loading wood stove before and put it down to that, also the fact I didn’t  read the instructions so that didn't do me any favours while trying to get a brew on the go when it was cold and wet. However I finally got the thing blazing and staying alight long enough to boil a fill kettle and was honestly taken back by its performance once the biolite had sparked into life, with the fans in full throttle its honestly sounds like a mini jet engine and was blisteringly hot. After taking it out a couple of nights later and learning from my mistakes of the previous night I used some feathered fat wood and took a little extra time to prepare the kindling that I stored in the nylon stuff sack supplied with the bundle. The result was astonishing! they key to using this stove is in its preparation, don’t try to rush the process and keep your first batch of kindling a similar size to the pellets that are also supplied by Biolite and as you top up some harder woods and pine cones are just the ticket. After learning my lesson I have had the stove out every time and I am more than happy with it, the battery performance I really can’t find fault with at all, It does the job of charging all the devices I plugged into it from my phone, camera, camcorder, my vaping box mod, and also my universal charger for my torches and head lamp Batteries. So everything I could throw at it was charged without any issues at all!In all weather conditions I have tested the bundle in over the last couple of months, going out on average 2 or 3 nights a week, sometimes just for a one nighter and sometimes two or three. It has performed beautifully. The little space at the base of the kettle was just enough to place a sponge and scouring pad inside a plastic bag for easy cleaning too.The GrillI found it to be too bulky for my needs, and me but would suit picnics, and anyone with a little more room. the grill in my experience can become a little too hot but a great addition to add to a small pack if hiking with the rest of the bundle, if you intend to stop for a cuppa and a bite to eat or keeping in the car or caravan, As long as its not with a full pack for long distances.Worth the price tag?As many things are these days it has been accused of being "gimmicky" by some but this is a cooking system that WILL last for years and in my opinion anything that does live up to its promises can’t be labelled as "gimmicky" Would I buy this again? If I were being honest, I would have to say yes, with the exception of the grill. Not for any other reason than it is not suited to my preference and I just do not have the room in my pack to carry a grill of that size. However, at £229.95 it is certainly not in everyone’s budget unfortunately. If you can afford the price tag, I would definitely recommend it over many other stoves.Final ThoughtThe Biolite stove is a feature rich, rock solid stove and cook system that has seen some harsh handling, been out in all weather conditions, and although it has lost its attractive brushed finish in parts. I know that If I have that with me it won’t let me down, any device will charge without problems, Biolite offer an excellent guarantee as an added bonus.I initially was expecting a "gimmicky" overpriced stove that would not stand the test of time in the real world. Over the last couple of months, I have been proved wrong on all points with this and it has now taken up permanent residence in my pack, regardless of where I go.
